Customers look for products and services in their community because they are ready to buy. In the past people would look for those services in the yellow pages.  Now  search engines provide those results to customers in the form of listings.

These listings are found by customers through categories and keywords. If you in Houston and you are hungry, let's try searching for an Italian restaurant in the Memorial area on a popular search engine

When customers search: 75% of the top half of the page is Local Search Listings or its functions (maps).  18% are pay-per-click ads. And the final 7% is a Yelp link to more Local Search Listings!

 

Even if you have the most awesome website and it was sitting right under the yelp link, the customer's eyes are drawn to the pictures and the map.  This is intentional.  They want customers clicking on GoogleMaps and the Google+ listings (emphases added).

 

This is why Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is useless for non-web based businesses.  The display of your website has been phased out.

 

If people are using a smartphone, tablet, or going directly to map/local sites (GoogleMaps), they will only get business listings.

What good is a listing if you are 4 pages back?

 

Therein lies the difference between Maginot and others.  The Google local search algorithm has over 300 criteria, each one weighed differently depending on multiple variables.  The Yahoo local search algorithm has over 200 criteria.  In order to scale the rankings and stand-out, you need an expert that will work dilligently to make your business highly visible.
